| Nestled
in a green Andean valley at an elevation of 2,850 meters, the
capital of Ecuador is situated at the foot of the Volcano Pichincha.
One of the oldest cities in South America, Quito is one of the
few cities that has conserved its unique treasures from colonial
times and, accordingly, was named a World Cultural Heritage
by UNESCO in 1978. The city's bustling plazas, colorful street
markets, majestic churches, and colonial architecture stand
in contrast to Quito's modern cosmopolitan feel. |

| The tour
begins in the San Agustín Convent and continues to the Plaza
Grande, which is surrounded by the Presidential Palace and the
Cathedral. Along very narrow streets we will continue to the
Compania Church to appreciate its unique baroque architecture.
With its colonial convent, the Franciscana Church is the oldest
and greatest colonial construction of the city, boasting incredible
paintings which add remarkable color and beauty to this already
incredibly beautiful place. To finish the tour we will visit
the Panecillo, a spectacular statue located at the peak of a
steep hill that offers visitors views of Quito and the Pichincha
Volcano. If the skies are clear, we will be able to admire the
snow-capped volcano summits of Cotopaxi, Cayambe, and Antisana.
Later we will travel to the "Mitad del Mundo" just north of
Quito, a place where the equatorial line divides the world into
two hemispheres. In the 18th century, they declared this place
to be precise location of the equatorial line, and a monument
stands on that line today. Within this monument there is a museum
in which you can find distinct relics from diverse Ecuadorian
cultures. |
